Hartverscheurende voorstelling
(Theaterkrant*****)

Heartrending performance
Mezzo-soprano Christianne Stotijn, actress Julika Marijn and the Amsterdam Ensemble created a performance, which was awarded with five stars, about the stirring life of Etty Hillesum. In the 1980s, almost forty years after she died in Auschwitz, Hillesum acquired national fame when her diaries were published. In these diaries she describes a period in which nothing was certain anymore. In spite of these hard times her stories are characterised by joie de vivre and self-mockery, as if she is refusing to be victim of circumstance. For Hillesum’s final letters Stotijn chose Mahler’s touching ‘Ich bin der Welt abhanden gekommen’, from the ‘Rückert Lieder’. You will also hear music from amongst others Schubert and Tsjaikovski.

“A heart-breaking performance that transcends every label.” (Theaterkrant *****)
