Maori-mythen over aarde en vrouw
‘KIRI’ toont een bijzonder facet uit de cultuur van de Maori, de autochtone bevolking van Nieuw-Zeeland. Deze performance is een meeslepend duet tussen danseres Louise Potiki Bryant en keramiste Paerau Corneal die in een mix van dans, video en klei een ode brengen aan Hine-ahu-one. Zij is in de Maori-mythologie de eerste vrouw, die werd gevormd uit aarde en klei. ‘KIRI’, het Maori-woord voor huid, verkent de grensvlakken van de voor Maori heilige status van onze aarde en de vruchtbare rol van klei daarin. De aarde is een levend organisme dat we met respect moeten behandelen, net als ons lichaam. ‘KIRI’ is een dan ook een dynamische ontmoeting tussen klei, huid en lichaam.

‘KIRI’ presents a special aspect about the culture of the Maori, the indigenous population of New Zealand. This performance consists of a stirring duet between dancer Louise Potiki Bryant and ceramist Paerau Corneal, who, with a mix of dance, video and clay, pay a tribute to Hine-ahu-one. According to Maori mythology she is the first woman and she arose from earth and clay. ‘KIRI’, the Maori word for skin, explores the principle of the in Maori culture holy status of our earth and the fertility of clay. The earth is a living organism we should treat with respect, just as our body. ‘KIRI’ thus is a dynamic encounter between clay, skin and body.
