Het ‘oh, daar heb je die oude wereldmuziek weer’ cliché kan zo het raam uit als het gaat om Songhoy Blues. De band, die bestaat uit 4 talentvolle, scherpe en doortastende jongens uit Mali, heeft al behoorlijk wat leed gezien. Gelukkig zie je dit leed niet terug in hun muziek, maar krijg je juist een enorme dosis positivisme van ze cadeau. Ze mogen dan wel uit het exotische en ‘gevaarlijke’ Mali komen, maar hun muziek doet niets van dat vermoeden. Het zijn gewoon vier alledaagse jongens die de gitaar, drums, en bas bespelen om met volle overgave hun verhaal te vertellen.

Inspiratie
Geobsedeerd door hiphop en R&B – waaronder de groten als Tupac Shakur en Craig David – maar ook bands als The Beatles, The Police, Bad Company en Jimi Hendrix, hebben deze jongens de perfecte manier gevonden om het nieuwe met de oude, traditionele Songhoy muziek te mixen. Ze hebben traditionele stijlen als de takamba en de meer moderne op gitaar gebaseerde klanken van Ibrahim Dicko, Baba Salah en Ali Farka Touré samen laten komen in een conventionele westerse sound. Het mengen van de moderne en traditionele sounds is een echte uitdaging geworden voor de jongens van Songhoy Blues. Voor gitarist Oumar Touré is het mixen van deze soms botsende stijlen nooit echt een probleem voor de band. “Het is eerder een kracht,” zegt Oumar oprecht. “We hebben nooit voor moderne muziek gekozen. De moderne muziek heeft ons opgezocht. Maar dat betekent niet dat we de moderne stijl gaan volgen en dat we onze cultuur laten vallen. We luisteren, we onderzoeken en we proberen een tussenweg te vinden. Dat is wat ons kracht geeft.”
Resistance
Met de release van het tweede album ‘Resistance’ komen de jongens een bezoek brengen aan Groningen en hopen ze hun publiek te kunnen bevangen met hun rijke, eclectische sound! Denk je nou, wat klinkt dit toch bekend..? Dat kan dan zeker kloppen. Het is in essentie rasechte blues. Daar waar het ooit vandaan kwam.

All those tired old ‘world music’ prejudices have no place when it comes to Songhoy Blues. The band consists of four talented, hungry, sharp and outward-looking young men from a part of the world (Mali) that has had more than its share of pain and conflict in recent years. But it has given far more than its share of music and joy to the world in return over the past four decades. That place may seem strange, alien and ‘exotic’ to some, but deep down, Songhoy Blues are familiar proposition: four guys, guitar, drums, bass and vocals, driving rhythms, big hearts and a big story to tell.
Obsessed with hip hop and R&B – names like Tupac Shakur and Craig David pop-up readily – as well as bands like The Beatles, The Police, Bad Company and Jimi Hendrix, these boys have found a perfect way to mix the new with the old, home grown songs and dances of the Songhoy. They have incorporated both traditional styles like the takamba and the modern guitar-based sounds popularised by the likes of Ibrahim Dicko, Baba Salah and, above all, Ali Farka Touré in their more western-conventional sound. Blending the trad and the modern, the homegrown and the foreign, the youthful and the ancient became a mission of sorts. For Oumar, this clash of opposites has never posed a problem. “It’s more of a strength,” he says. “Because we never chose modernity. Modernity chose us. But we don’t just follow modernity; we plumb our ancient culture. We look, we listen, we research deep into things. That’s what gives us strength.”
With their second album ‘Resistance’ the boys will make a visit to Groningen, hoping to surprise their audiences with their rich, eclectic and musically adventurous sound. You say it sounds familiar? Course it does. It’s rock’n’roll. It’s the blues. Straight from the land where it all began!
