Straight from Athens, Alabama they were there all of a sudden in 2011: Alabama Shakes. Ever since they signed contracts at Rough Trade (UK) and ATO (US) the soulful roots rock band has very quickly made a name for themselves. The eye catcher of Alabama Shakes is without a doubt female singer Brittany Howard who with both her appearance and her impressive voice immediately demands all your attention.
Debut album ‘Boys & Girls’ (2012) sold over half a million copies in the Sates and reached the golden status. The band was also nominated for three Grammies. The success brought the Shakes to festivals such as Glastonbury, Newport Folk Festival, Coachella and this year’s Rock Werchter. They also gave an iron-strong performance at Jimmy Fallon’s ‘The Tonight Show’.
On the new album ‘Sound & Shakes’ you can clearly hear that the band has been ‘on the road’ a lot these last years, because the record contains a lot of new influences. The Shakes are slowly stepping off the beaten track, and the music has only gotten more exciting. And with their iron-strong live reputation, this is a concert you do not want to miss!

Sinds ze contracten tekenden bij Rough Trade (UK) en ATO (US) heeft de soulvolle rootsrock band razendsnel furore gemaakt. De blikvanger van Alabama Shakes is zonder meer zangeres Brittany Howard, die zowel met haar verschijning als haar indrukwekkende stem direct je aandacht opeist.
Debuutalbum ‘Boys & Girls’ (2012) verkocht inmiddels meer dan een half miljoen exemplaren in de States en heeft de gouden status bereikt. Ook werd de band genomineerd voor drie Grammy’s. Het succes bracht de Shakes op festivals als Glastonbury, Newport Folk Festival, Coachella en Rock Werchter. Ook gaven ze een ijzersterke performance bij Jimmy Fallon’s ‘The Tonight Show’.
Op het nieuwe album ‘Sound & Color’ is duidelijk te horen dat de band de laatste jaren veel ‘on the road’ is geweest, want de plaat laat een hoop nieuwe invloeden horen. Zo stappen de Shakes langzaam van de gebaande paden, waarmee de muziek alleen nog maar spannender is geworden. En met hun ijzersterke livereputatie op zak, is dit een concert dat je niet wilt missen!
In 2011 brak de Engelse soulzanger Michael Kiwanuka door bij het grote publiek met de singles ‘Tell Me A Tale’ en ‘Home Again’. In datzelfde jaar ging hij meteen op tour met wereldster Adele. In 2012 verscheen debuutalbum ‘Home Again’ en won hij de prestigieuze ‘Sound Of…’ prijs van de BBC, een jaarlijkse competitie voor dé artiesten van de toekomst.
Voordat hij begon als soloartiest, was hij sessiegitarist in bands als Chipmunk en Bashy. Kiwanuka werd al vergeleken met grote artiesten als Randy Newman en Otis Redding. Na twee EP’s en de debuutplaat, dook hij vorig jaar de studio in met Jack White (The White Stripes) voor de fantastische nieuwe single ‘You’ve Got Nothing To Lose’.
