Russische componisten in Italië
Russische componisten waren dol op Italië. Na een bezoek aan Florence schreef de doorgaans zwaarmoedige Tsjaikovski een zonnig werk voor strijkers. Ook Stravinsky was vaak en graag in Italië en werd in zijn favoriete stad Venetië begraven. Uit zijn beroemde balletwerk ‘Pulcinella’ – genoemd naar een personage uit de Italiaanse commedia dell’arte – selecteerde hij een kleine selectie dansen en bewerkte die voor viool. Drie eeuwen eerder werd de Italiaanse violist en componist Tartini in een droom overvallen door een virtuoos vioolspelende duivel. Toen hij wakker werd, schreef hij de muziek op en noemde het stuk de ‘Duivelstrillersonate’.

Amsterdam Sinfonietta zocht en vond een ware duivelskunstenaar om het werk de uitvoering te geven die het verdient: de Australiër Ray Chen, winnaar van onder meer de Koningin Elisabethwedstrijd en het Yehudi Menuhin Concours en boegbeeld van de nieuwe generatie violisten.

Devilish artist Ray Chen
Russian composers loved Italy. After a visit to Florence, the usually melancholic Tchaikovsky created a sunny composition for strings. Stravinsky, too, was often and enthusiastically in Italy and would later be buried there in his favourite city, Venice. From his famous ballet composition ‘Pulcinella’ – named after a character from the Italian commedia dell’arte – he selected a small selection of dances and adapted them for violin. Three century before that, the Italian violinist and composer Tartini dreamed of a devil who artfully played the violin. When he awoke, he wrote down the music and named the composition ‘Devil’s Trill Sonata’. Amsterdam Sinfonietta searched for and found a true devilish artist play the material the way it deserves to be played: the Australian musician Ray Chen, winner of among other the Queen Elisabeth competition and the Yehudi Menuhin Competition, and a figurehead of a new generation of violinists.
