De kleine zaal van De Oosterpoort verandert op 6 november in een grote lounge-room. Want wie naar de muziek van dj-producer Emancipator luistert en internet afstruint naar omschrijvingen van zijn muziek, komt onherroepelijk uit bij termen als mellow, warme sfeer, behaaglijke melodieën, organische en tegelijk dynamische muziek.
IJzingwekkend goed
Douglas Appling, beter bekend als Emancipator, brak in 2006 als negentienjarige door met zijn ijzingwekkende sfeeralbum Soon It Will Be Cold Enough. Hij verbindt daarop elektronische dancemuziek met hiphop en klassieke muziek. Net als het drankje Rivella misschien een beetje vreemd, maar wel lekker: zo weet Emancipator een fantastische balans te vinden tussen symfonische melodieën en downtempo beats.
Nieuwe album Baralku
Deze fusion van allerlei stijlen en instrumenten is ook te horen op de vervolgalbums Safe In The Steep Cliffs, Dusk To Dawn en Seven Seas, waarop Emancipator een kleurrijk boeket van dromerige melodieën laat horen. Op zijn laatste album Baralku uit 2017 laat hij zijn kenmerkende downtempo hip-hop beats horen met vleugjes wereldmuziek, jazz, folk en klassiek. The New York Times schreef vol enthousiasme: “You don’t usually hear much banjo during a club set of electronic dance music, and the laptop of a producer-composer isn’t flanked by a classical violist. But with Emancipator no part of his fusion is forced and he produces enough grit to steer the music away from chill-out easy listening of new-age monotony.”
Als in een hangmat op een tropisch eiland
Genoeg pit dus, die muziek van Emancipator. Terwijl hij het publiek met zijn relaxte, kalmerende muziek naar een hangmat op een tropisch eiland of een hottub met een goed glas wijn voert. Plekken waar een mens graag vertoeft en dat maakt De Oosterpoort de place-to-be op deze novemberavond, als Emancipator langskomt met zijn liveband.

On November 6, De Oosterpoort’s small auditorium changes into a big lounge room. Everyone who listens to DJ and producer Emancipator and scours the Internet for descriptions of his music, inevitably lands on characterisations as mellow, warm atmosphere, comfortable melodies, and simultaneously organic and dynamic.
Chillingly good
Douglas Appling, more commonly known as Emancipator, broke through in 2006, at the age of 19, with his chilling atmospheric album Soon It Will Be Cold Enough. On this album, he connects electronic dance music with hip-hop and classical music. It is just as the drink Rivella: slightly odd perhaps, but good. Emancipator finds a fantastic balance between symphonic melodies and down-tempo beats.
New album Baralku
This fusion of all kinds of styles and instruments returns on the sequel albums Safe In The Steep Cliffs, Dusk To Dawn and Seven Seas, on which Emancipator presents a colourful bouquet of dreamy melodies. His latest 2017 album Baralku contains his characteristic down-tempo hip-hop beats with hints of world music, jazz, folk, and classical music. Like lying in a hammock on a tropical island
So, plenty of spirit in Emancipator’s music. With his relaxed, calming music, he leads his audience to a hammock on a tropical island, or a hot tub with a good glass of wine. Places where people like to be. De Oosterpoort will be such a place to be on this November evening, when Emancipator will be there with his live band.
