Ergens tussen dromerige folk en elektronische melancholie vind je haux, het smokey-eyed multimedia silhouette van Woodson Black. Op 28 mei komt de singer-songwriter uit Londen naar Groningen, voor een intiem concert in de USVA.
Fotograaf wordt muzikant
Singer-songwriter en producer Woodson Black, beter bekend als haux, is opgegroeid in het landelijke Berkshires, Engeland. Hij ontdekte en ontwikkelde zijn stem terwijl hij door de stille bossen en uitgestrekte landschappen zwierf. Verzot op muziek, maar te verlegen om op te treden, besloot Woodson Muziek management te studeren. Hij begon met vertellen over het leven door middel van fotografie en film. Hij ontwikkelde daarbij een pastorale esthetiek die uitgroeide tot een bron van inspiratie voor haux.
Haux
Een stage bij een platenmaatschappij bracht Woodson Black in Londen, waar hij snel verliefd werd op deze stad. Hij maakte snel naam in de local scene als schrijver voor verschillende muziekbladen. Nog voordat Woodson Black Haux bedacht bracht hij zijn avonden in Londen door bij concerten van Lucy Rose, Daughter en Keaton Henson. Hier ontwikkelde hij een liefde voor integere intieme songs.
Terwijl hij voor andere artiesten werkte, perfectioneerde Woodson Black zijn eigen sound. Hij vroeg voorzichtig om feedback van vrienden uit de muziekindustrie. Toen zijn vrienden uit de industrie hem meer als artiest dan als collega gingen zien, omarmde hij deze ontwikkeling en werd haux geboren.
Multidisciplinair kunstexperiment
Woodson Black stopte alles in het schrijven van teksten en het produceren en mixen van muziek voor haux. Ondertussen legde hij zijn muzikale reis vast op foto’s en film. Zijn debutalbum All we’ve known is geschreven in zijn ouderlijk huis en in zijn flat in Hackney en bevat doordoor zowel invloeden van de uitgestrekte natuur als de energie van de grote stad.
Door zijn autonome aanpak, waarbij hij film, fotografie en muziek vermengt tot multidisciplinair kunstexperiment, bouwde Woodson Black al snel een fanbase op over de hele wereld. Zijn werk werd al vroeg opgepikt door onder meer The New York Times, Spotify en BBC. Met als gevolg; vijftigmiljoen streams en uitverkochte shows in meerdere continenten gedurende 2017.

Woodson Black komt niet alleen naar Groningen. Op 28 mei neemt hij Henry Jamison mee naar de USVA. De Amerikaanse singer-songwriter komt uit een familie van schrijvers en musici. En dat hoor je terug in de indie-folk die hij maakt. Met zijn adembenemende debut album The Wilds laat Jamison zien dat hij een bijzondere verhalenverteller is. Door akoestische gitaar en banjo te mixen met geprogrammeerde percussie loops en synthesizers creëert hij een sound die oh zo goed past bij de tegenstrijdigheden in het hedendaagse leven; de natuurlijke wereld en onze gemaakte maatschappij.

Special guest: Rosie Carney
Rosie Carney is een Britse singer-songwriter oorspronkelijk uit Hampshire (UK). Haar inspiratie haalt ze uit het prachtige landschap rondom haar huis op het prachtige schiereiland Rosguil. Op haar 10e begon ze al met het componeren van liedjes achter haar piano. Muziek is voor haar een uitlaatklep en ze uit graag haar gevoelens in songteksten als in de muziek. Dit resulteert in folkmuziek waarmee Carney rechtstreeks een weg baant naar je hart. Deze kwetsbaarheid doet haar veel volwassener laten klinken, dan haar leeftijd je zou doen denken.

Haux
Growing up in the Berkshires, Woodson found his voice while wandering the quiet woods and rural landscapes. He narrated life through film photographs, developing a pastoral aesthetic that would go on to inspire Haux. Stuck on music but shy on performing, Woodson set off for Northeastern University to major in music business.
An internship at a record label brought him to London, and Woodson soon fell for the city diving into the local scene and writing for several music magazines. Evenings spent lost in the performances of Lucy Rose, Daughter and Keaton Henson cemented his attachment to the intersection of intimacy and integrity.
While working at labels for other artists, Woodson quietly crafted his own sound, cautiously seeking feedback from his friends in the industry. When conversations moved from future employment to the development and nurturing of Haux, he embraced it.
Cross-platform art experiment
When the time finally arrived, Woodson poured every part of himself into writing, producing, mixing, photographing, and filming every element of Haux. The debut EP that emerged – All We’ve Known – was created between his family home in the Berkshires and his small flat in Hackney.
Despite – or perhaps because of – his highly individualistic approach, Black’s cross-platform art experiment quickly built an audience throughout the globe. Early support from The New York Times, Clash, SPIN, Spotify, Sirius XM, BBC 1, KCRW and more lead to fifty million streams and sold out shows across multiple continents in 2017.

If you take a look through his family tree, one thing becomes abundantly clear: Henry Jamison was born to write songs. There’s his father, a classical composer, and his mother, an English professor, who both inspired and encouraged him directly, but if you continue tracing Jamison’s lineage back even further, some interesting names start to turn up. Go back to the 1800’s, for example, and you’ll find “Battle Cry of Freedom” author George Frederick Root, the most popular songwriter of the Civil War era.
With his stunning debut album, ‘The Wilds,’ Jamison is ready to claim his place as the latest in a long line of remarkable storytellers. Blending delicate acoustic guitar and banjo with programmed percussion loops and synthesizers, the Vermont songwriter grapples with the jarring dissonances of contemporary life in his music as he struggles to reconcile the clashes between our inner and outer selves, the natural world and our fabricated society. Jamison is a solitary artist, writing, recording, and arranging everything himself on the album including the string arrangements, and he pens his lyrics with cinematic precision, conjuring vivid scenes and fully realized characters wrestling with existential crises and modern malaise.
