Quincy Jones, Herbie Hancock en Pat Metheny zijn al fan. Tijdens het eerste Nederlandse optreden van de Londense wonderboy Jacob Collier op North Sea Jazz 2016 sloot een grote groep mensen zich bij deze grootheden aan. Op YouTube is hij al langer een hit, ook live maakt hij indruk vanwege zijn ingenieuze optredens, waarbij hij in zijn eentje klinkt als een volledige band. In 2019 komt het multi-talent terug naar Nederland en op 12 februari staat hij in De Oosterpoort.

Een jazz-messias is opgestaan
“Een nieuwe jazz-messias is opgestaan”, aldus The Guardian. Jacob Collier begon op zijn 17e in zijn slaapkamer met video’s waarin hij alle instrumenten zelf inspeelt. De jonge zanger en multi-instrumentalist bouwt zijn liedjes laag voor laag op. En daar komen vervolgens songs uit die bestaan uit een eigenzinnige combinatie van jazz, beatbox, folk, soul, triphop en zelfs klassieke muziek. In zijn video’s, maar vooral tijdens zijn live performances improviseert Jacob Collier er op los.
Stortvloed van muzikaliteit
Jazzy impro. Funky basloopjes. Fusion synths. Meerstemmige zang. Wat Jacob Collier live inspeelt wordt eindeloos herhaald en vermenigvuldigd. Daarover zingt hij, van doowop, soul tot scat, terwijl hij de lagen snel stapelt. “Het is een imponerende, sterk op effecten leunende performance, die overstroomt van muzikaliteit”, aldus NRC.

In de YouTube video’s die hem een ster maakten en op het debuut album In My Room (2016), waarvoor hij een Grammy won, zong, speelde en produceerde Jacob Collier alles zelf. Zijn nieuwe project Djesse (2018) staat juist bol van de samenwerkingen, met onder meer het Metropole Orkest. Dit project is een cyclus van vier albums met bijdragen van een wereldwijde cast van Colliers muzikale inspiraties: van a capella groepen tot gospel koren, Afrikaanse legendes en indie rock sterren.
Aanstaande vrijdag brengt Jacob Collier With The Love In My Heart uit, de eerste single van het album uit de reeks van het project Djesse.

Quincy Jones, Herbie Hancock, and Pat Metheny already are fan. During London wonder boy Jacob Collier’s first Dutch performance, at North Sea Jazz 2016, a big group of people joined these greats. On YouTube he has been a hit for longer and he impresses live too with his ingenious shows, during which he plays on his own but sounds like an entire band. In 2019 the multi-talent returns to the Netherlands and he will be performing in De Oosterpoort on 12 February.
Jazz’s new messiah
The Guardian called him “jazz’s new messiah”. At the age of 17, Jacob Collier started making videos in his bedroom for which he played every instrument himself. The young singer and multi-instrumentalist builds his songs layer on layer. This results in songs that consist of a quirky combination of jazz, beatbox, folk, soul, trip-hop, and even classical music. In videos, but especially during his live performances, Jacob Collier improvises away.
Flood of musicality
Jazzy improvisation. Funky bass loops. Fusion synths. Multi-voice singing. What Jacob Collier records live is repeated and multiplied endlessly. He sings about it, from doo-wop and soul to scat, while stacking the layers rapidly. “It is an impressive, strongly effect-based performance that is flooding with musicality,” according to national newspaper NRC.

In the YouTube video that turned him into a star and on the debut album In My Room (2016), for which he was awarded with a Grammy, Jacob Collier played and produced everything himself. His new project Djesse (2018), on the other hand, is brimming with collaborations, with among others the Metropole Orkest. The project is a cycle of four albums, with contributions from a world-wide cast of Collier’s musical inspirations: from a cappella groups to gospel choirs, African legends, and indie-rock stars.
