Hierop zei ze: “It toughened me up”.

Onweerstaanbare sfeer

(Written in Music)

The music of the Nicole Atkins, born in New Jersey, cannot be described by just a single genre. It is a diverse, melancholic trip with a dark edge, passing pop, country, soul, and blues. Following a phenomenal double concert with Dylan LeBlanc during the previous Noorderzon edition, Nicole Atkins returns to Groningen on Sunday 28 April for a solo performance in the Der Aa-Theater.

Debut
Nicole Atkins’ 2007 debut album Neptune City was received well immediately. “The album, produced by Tore Johansson (Franz Ferdinand, Cardigans, New Order) is full of grand orchestral arrangements, in which she effortlessly keeps a firm footing with her ditto voice” (OOR, in Dutch). Next to this strong debut, you might know Nicole Atkins for her unparalleled cover of David Bowie’s Heroes she made together with Postmodern Jukebox. The cover was used for a worldwide Heineken commercial.

Setbacks
The road Nicole Atkins covered to her most recent album was not an easy one, for Nicole was under the weather for a long time. She did not feel anything. When her fans responded to her show with great enthusiasm, she did not feel anything. Her new lover was madly in love with her, but she did not feel anything. She thought this was caused by the drinking problem she tried to live without. But on the first day Nicole was sober her father was diagnosed with lung cancer. She said about this: “It toughened me up”.

Irresistable atmosphere
From that moment onwards, the songs started coming again. With the album Goodnight Rhonda Lee as the result. With Goodnight Rhonda Lee Atkins creates an irresistible atmosphere filled with ageless drama and tragedy. “In the silence after the last pedal steel notes, there is only one conclusion to be drawn: with this compelling, very diverse long-playing record, Nicole Atkins has delivered her best work so far.” (Written in Music, in Dutch)
