Rollercoaster van absolute topstukken
Onder leiding van dirigent John Axelrod, leerling van Leonard Bernstein, neemt het NNO u mee in een achtbaan van absolute topstukken van Oost-Europese componisten. Dit ‘bucketlist’ concert opent met de sprookjesopera Ruslan en Ludmila van de Russische componist Glinka. De achtbaan voer u verder langs muzikale hoogtepunten van Sjostakovitsj, met Daniel Müller-Schott als cellist. Geen componist in Rusland die zo indringend uitdrukking wist te geven aan de ellende van oorlog en terreur als Sjostakovitsj. Als leerling van cellist, pianist en dirigent Rostropovitsj weet Daniel Müller-Schott uit de eerste hand hoe de componist de cello wilde laten zingen en huilen. Na de pauze verschijnt sopraan Sara Hershkowitz op het podium. Mysteries of the Macabre is een bundeling van drie aria’s uit een opera van Ligeti. Het gebeurt niet vaak dat deze absurdistische en spectaculaire performance, waarin de zangeres en de orkestmusici zingen, spelen én acteren, live kan worden beleefd. De achtbaan vol verrassingen en muzikale verrijking komt na de laatste compositie van Rachmaninov tot stilstand. Slavische Dansen is de muziek van de weemoed. Soms opvallend jazzy en swingend, met veel slagwerk en koper, een schitterende saxofoonsolo en betoverende kleurencombinaties.

Conducted by John Axelrod, student of Leonard Bernstein, the NNO takes you on a rollercoaster with top-notch pieces by Eastern European composers. This bucket list concert starts with the fairy-tale opera Ruslan and Ludmila by Russian composer Glinka. The rollercoaster also presents you with musical highlights by Sjostakovitsj, with cellist Daniel Müller-Schott. No composer in Russia was able to give expression to the misery of war and terror as grippingly as Sjostakovitsj. Being a student of cellist, pianist, and conductor Rostropovitsj, Daniel Müller-Schott learnt at first hand how the composer intended for the cello to cry and sing. After the interval, soprano Sara Hershkowitz enters the stage. Mysteries of the Macabre is a compilation of three arias from an opera by Ligeti. It is not often that this absurd and spectacular performance, in which singers and orchestra musicians sing, play, and act, is performed live. The rollercoaster full of surprises and musical enrichment will come to a standstill after the final composition by Rachmaninov. Slavonic Dances is the music of melancholy. It is strikingly jazzy and swinging now and then, with a lot of percussion and brass, a splendid saxophone solo, and enchanting colour combinations.
